The Nathaniel Rochester
House
Hillsborough Historic District, NC, 2011
Restoration of ca. 1785 house, and 1550sf contemporary, passive and active solar addition; the first contemporary addition to a historic house approved by the Historic District Commission. Primary goals, in addition to providing more space for the growing family, was to restore the significantly historic house, to add a second floor beyond the original house while keeping the addition roof below the height of the original, and to reflect the present age in the appearance of the most remote part of the addition. Its form is a direct response to passive solar principles of shading.
